3D Ant Farm Simulation

Interactive 3D Ant Farm and Pheromone Trail Simulation

This is a real-time 3D simulation that demonstrates how ants use pheromones to communicate. The student is presented with an interactive 3D environment where 2 competing ant colonies are searching for food. The student is able to interact with the virtual ants and the environment to see how the ants will react to changes in their surroundings.

Zoom, pan, and rotate around the 3D environment to explore the simulator. Interact with the 3D simulation by adding or subtracting ants, moving obstacles into the path of the ants, or adding artificial pheromones. Try moving the food source to a new location after the ants have found it, to see a new trail get established and an old trail abandoned.

3D Ant Pheromone Simulation

The simulation allows the user to speed up, slow down, or even stop time, so that they can more closely study how ants use pheromones to communicate. The simulation provides a visualization of the pheromone tunnels created by ants so that students are able to see something that is actually invisible in the real world.

Borrowing popular video game functionality, like a mini map and first-person views, the simulation provides modern student audiences with an immersive learning environment that captures and holds their attention.

3D Ant Pheromone Simulation

ForgeFX developed this interactive 3D simulation for Pearson Education to help students understand how ants communicate using pheromones. Like other insects, ants perceive smells with their long, thin, and mobile antennae. The antennae provide information about the direction and intensity of scents, allowing the pheromone trails to be followed by ants.
