The Unreal Game Engine

The Unreal Game Engine, developed by Epic Games, was first used in 1998 for the popular game Unreal but has since been leveraged by many games including Rainbow Six, BioShock, and Raven Shield. The Unreal Game Engine, primarily intended for the use of developing first-person shooter games, is a complete interactive 3D software development framework.

The Unreal Engine supports many different platforms including Windows, Mac, Linux, Xbox, and PlayStation. The core of the engine is written in C++, however a large amount of the game play code is written using UnrealScript. This proprietary scripting language allows users to modify game play without having to edit the internal workings of the engine. The Unreal engine supports high dynamic range rendering, dynamic shading, pixel-based lighting, EAX 5.0 and many other modern features

The full Unreal Game Engine costs $350,000 to license, however the Unreal Development Kit is free for noncommercial development.
